I’d like to wish all the residents of Glasgow North East, my friends and family near and far

a very happy Christmas 2016

TOY DRIVE

My constituency office joined in a TOY DRIVE for the Glasgow Care Foundation this December. We collected donations of toys and selections boxes from residents across our very generous constituency which we passed on to the Glasgow Care Foundation.

For over 140 years Glasgow Care Foundation have been assisting families and individuals in Glasgow who cannot get help from any other agency with basic household goods. They also support local community projects, holidays for families as well as distributing toys and food vouchers at Christmas. They launched the Charity Christmas Campaign to take donations of new toys, gifts for teenagers, or supermarket gift vouchers to help families buy Christmas dinner.

I’m very pleased to say your donations were distributed to over 90 children whose families are assisted by SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health).

A MASSIVE thank you to you all.

It’s been quite an eventful year with one or two surprises but I’m glad to say that the people of Glasgow North East have come together again to support their community.

Despite the financial struggles that many face at this time of year it’s so heartwarming to see that our community can come together to others in need.

I’m very proud to say I’m a Glaswegian.

CROWDFUNDER:

Sleeping Bags for Rough Sleepers in Glasgow

A crowdfunder was set up to help people who are homeless. Glasgow charities have run out of sleeping bags for rough sleepers. It’s freezing out there and we wanted to at east keep people warm. A sleeping bag costs £20.

The Provan SNP branch set up this crowdfunder to try to help.

People should not be sleeping rough in 2016, but that sadly is still the case. There are many reasons for this and I’ve been trying to understand some of them. I KNOW there are wider issues at stake – improvements to systems, policy and practice to support people with often complex needs are required. Both myself and Ivan McKee MSP are working on trying to find the solutions. But for now, people simply cannot be left to freeze.

Ivan and I along have met with charities working with homeless people in Glasgow and they have told us the immediate issue is the lack of sleeping bags for rough sleepers. We will use the money the money donated to buy sleeping bags to pass on to Glasgow City Mission and The Simon Community.
